Happy Birthday Lamp Post Artist Spotlight @ Crate Brewery
In today’s consumerist world, the smallest of achievements are deemed important enough to celebrate. As a society, we pump an increasing amount into gifts for various occasions that dominate our calendars. The birthday is the focus of this project in which Parnell highlights the absurdity of a celebration in which the only achievement is that of maintaining vitality for an entire year. The image of a lamppost with flowers attached evokes ideas of roadside death, which Parnell juxtaposes with the theme of birth and a consumerist celebration of life. ‘Why not join me in celebrating the birth of a lamppost?’ Simul- taneously commending one of the most overlooked and useful implements in our daily lives whilst questioning how far we are willing to take this obsession of self-gratification.
"Humanity has designed ever since the very first day it picked up a stick and shaped it into a tool. Design today is about new products, services and operational models. It has created preferred and desirable solutions and value on multiple levels for users, organisations, the ecosystem and society at large. It has linked human creativity to new, useful and diffusible ideas, enabling innovation and potential well-being for many. Design helps to create the future, and thus to see, acknowledge and implement the changes needed to get there." We invite you to come and be part of designing the future as Loughborough University London kicks off its series of #WickWednesday talks with an introduction to Design Innovation from Professor Mikko Koria Director of the Institute for Design Innovation. This is the first in a series of talks looking at innovation and entrepreneurship as drivers for change in the modern world. Academics from Loughborough University London will lead these talks over the next 12 months. Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic drinks will be served from 5.00pm until 6.00pm.
Irene Cioni is a dancer and choreographer with more than 15 years experience in dancing, creating, producing and collaborating in many dance and theatre projects, in London and all over the world. Irene’s class will explore some of the principles of the Flying Low and Passing Through technique. It is a very physical floor work class that focuses on the way we go into and out of the ground; followed by both group and couple exercises we explore how to cross the space and how we connect to the room and our classmates. We will practice running, spiraling, squatting and we will explore different pathways. We will play with both the tools you learn in the class and the tools you bring from your own experience, and the class will culminate in a final group improvisation.
